Audition Lists
In June, the Houston Ballet will be holding an audition for Principal piccolo. I have created a PDF file that gives the specific excerpts with notes, tempi and errata. My main purpose in this was to take away any mystery of how we want to hear the excerpts performed. In addition, many of these parts are not easily obtained because they are from the ballet literature. Click on Piccolo Audition.
Over the years, I have been asked by students and colleagues to give a list of the orchestral excerpts that a flutist needs to learn for orchestral auditions. Below is an example of what a Symphony Orchestra Principal Flute audition list might look like. Its VERY long and exhaustive, but there have been some lists that looked like this! Sometimes, specific measures are given, however in this case, I am simply listing the entire work.
It is best to play from an actual orchestral part when possible. Remember: be prepared!
